I’m blogging from Handsets World in Berlin, where a couple of hundred delegates from the world’s handset manufacturers, mobile operators and vendors are enjoying unseasonably good weather and a packed agenda of seminars.
I’ll post a full round-up later in the week, until then, here are some key points…

Nokia averaging €30 gross profit per device. With an average 2.5 year lifecycle, that’s €1 p/month. It’s obvious that services (such as Ovi) must start to fill the void.

Less than 5% of consumer email boxes are accessed via the mobile.

The camera is the biggest factor in the decision making process for consumers. 200m photos are taken with Nokia phones every day.
Dr Ari Jaaski, director of open source operations, Nokia

Entry level devices; it’s not about taking high-end features and functions and seeding them cost effectively in entry level devices. It’s about understanding local and demographic demands. Our latest devices for the Indian market include an AM radio (because FM has patchy coverage). They allow ringtones to be recorded from the radio (because data connectivity is poor for ringtone downloading). They are loud (because street-life in India is loud!) and battery life is improved (to cope with power-outages).
Simon Rockman, head of requirements and applications, Sony Ericsson.
